happy Pirate day!

Hopefully I'll have more up tomorrow :)
My pirate name is:
Black Tom Kidd

Like anyone confronted with the harshness of robbery on the high seas, you can be pessimistic at times. Even though you're not always the traditional swaggering gallant, your steadiness and planning make you a fine, reliable pirate. Arr!

back in my apartment
Aug. 4th, 2006 | 10:49 pm
My parents are back from Argetina (bringing me many Argentinian goodies) and I'm finally back in may apartment, with may computer and all my wonderful toys!
Also, the big news is that my code is finally getting to go live. I've just transfered my new code and it is officially live. Tomorrow we also redo the network and hopefully won't be as late night as today...but it's still all worth it.
I'm also back to riding my bike. My coworker

A flurry of updates
Jul. 21st, 2006 | 12:58 pm
location: work
mood:
happy
First off, I moved in to my parent's house for 2 weeks, since they have gone off to Argentina and they needed someone to take care of the dog and the house. The dog is mine, so I decided to do it. This has pros and cons. On the pro side there's free food, good, big house that I can use to relax and have people over and its waaaay cooler than my apartment, whih is currently about the same temperature as an oven. On thecon side, no biking to school, which sucks since i just got a new (used) bike that I've been dying to try out. Also, none of my stuff, such as computer, large screen tv and ps2.
On the work side, I've finished 1/2 the large module that I was working on. I think that my work will become the default maybe in two weeks, depending whether I have to have the 2nd half done or not (which I may not have to). It is working very well and I really want to see how it fares in production.
On the kid side, we found a new daycare for him. Its about $10 more expensive per week, but there are more kids (10), a larger place, with a backyard and even a small kiddie pool, and they even bathe him and give him art ans crafts to play with. Overal I really love this new place. Plus, it's closer to my house (which, of course, I'm not living at at the moment) and to work as well.

another update
Jul. 11th, 2006 | 01:46 pm
location: work
Went to a ranch on the weekend with my son for one of his mother's law office retreats. Was a lot of fun. Nicolas got to meet a camel that was originally owned by Michael Jackson (name of Cosmos) and got to feed him and pet him, which he throughly enjoyed. Also got to see cows, horses and llamas.
Biking to work hasn't been going well, however. I have my son more often during the weeks, and when I don't have him, sometimes sleep is just too good to pass up. What I would really like is more motivation, but too busy for that too. Maybe what I might do is extend my hours to 4:30 and bike in the morenings anyways. The only problem with that is that it means less time for my son.
My friend G has also been staying at my house sporadically, since he's been kickd out of his and has no place to live. He usually stays when I'm not with my son, also affecting my biking since we usually hang out and drink when he's around, which makes geting up in the morning so much harder.
back to work...

Long due update
Jun. 22nd, 2006 | 08:30 am
location: Work
Have been pretty busy for a while, so I'll try to make this update long, but we'll see how it goes.
Saturday I had the "official" birthday party for Nicolas. We had a BBQ at the park (I BBQed) and it was a blast! There weren't many kids (he is, after all, only 1 year old, not really many friendships yet) but a lot of family friend came. We had a really good time, cooked ribs, burger, hotdogs and chicken (which Nicolas ate a little of each) as well as potato salad and stuff. The park was a site at the Old LA Zoo, which was next to all the old lion and other wild animals’ caves (all which are now available to the public). People played some sports, mingled and had a good time. Overall, it was a great success.
Then Sunday was father's day (my second, since Nicolas was born a week before the last one). We spent the whole day at my parent's house, and he gave me picture he himself painted (courtesy of his mom).
This week has been pretty good at well. Work-wise, we have a new lady in fundraising, who is a pleasure to work with (course, Satan himself would be more of a pleasure than the last one). She like the fundraising DB we had built for her, and is on board to build the next upgrade to it (sometime in Sep). Things are more pleasant on that department; everyone seems to be happier, and even my boss commented on how much better going over there was.
On my project end, I finished another large part of it and I am now finishing up the last touches before the last major piece. The last major piece is going to be the "learning tool", which is essentially a grade book combined with the ability to post assignments online, track student progress and be able to post grade reports online. One of the neatest things this school has going is that it is now moving to paperless grade reports, so no grade reports will be mailed. Instead all will be available to the parents and students online to peruse at their leisure. This section will eventually be expanded so that a "community of learners" will be created. That is, all work will be available for everyone to build on and expand. All work will be tagged, searchable and downloadable, including assignments, curriculum material, and actual student papers. This tool will also allow us to be able to keep track of what, exactly, students are failing at, and be able to address this deficiency.
It is a very exiting module.
Biking has also been going well. As of now I'm biking 3 times a week to my job. I wish it could be more, but the other 2 days I have to drop off the kid at the daycare center (which means using my car) and the exit to my school is exactly the same distance as the exit to my home. Plus, since I can only drop him off at 6:30, I would be late b y another 30-40 minutes if I biked, which is no good. So it does look like 3 times a week is all I'll be able to do, unless I decide to start coming in late.
I think thats all for now. I'll be writing the code to generate class information that students and teachers are enrolled in and maybe post again.

Nicolas' Birthday

I took Nicolas out for his first birthday yesterday. His mom and I decided since this was his day, we would both share it and go out with him. We went to the
It was very exiting seeing him follow all the fishes with his head and trying to reach them through the glass. There was plenty of pointing and saying "et!", so that we can name whatever he happened to be pointing at. We were there for well over 5 hours and enjoyed all of it.
After that, we went back and had dinner with him and his mom's brother. He scarfed down ribs, spinach & artichoke dip, baked potatoes and french fries and finally passed out from exhaustion.
It was a great birthday.

annoyed
Best thing about it now is that I got a new AC in my office (courtesy of
haleluwah
), so I can work without going crazy cause of the heat. Also, my baby's birthday is on. We're gonna have bbq at a park and hopefully invite other kids so that Nicolas can play with them.
Coding is slow, since I'm still waiting for information on how to write the next part (which is gonna be the final hurdle before release). Although the project is up to date and running smoothly. The good thing is that this part should be pretty easy to do, the bad part is that I need to get ready to release soon, so we'll see how much of a crunch I'm in a few weeks.
I've also started biking to work. Its about a 3 mile or so ride, and I can make it in about 30 mins to work...which is extremely slow compared to my car ride (5 mins) but it does help out waking me up in the morning, plus I hope it will help me loose the weight that I'm carrying. So far, its a pain to bike, since I'm waaaay out of shape, but I'm confident I will be able to master it by the end of the summer, and hopefully shave down my traveling time to 15 minutes. My bike kinda sucks (a girls bike....ewwww), but a co worker (once again,
haleluwah
) helped me fix it up so its ridable now (the first bike ride was a particular awful ride, since the bike was stuck in a rather high gear and I had to bike that way the whole way). It is actually a fun thing to do and I'm glad I'm doing it.
Course, this will only be for the summer, since once school starts I will need my car available again to be able to go to the other campuses in case of emergency. I'm thinking that after the summer, I will hopefully be in a way better shape and maybe I can start up Aikido again (if I can afford it).
The reason, BTW, that my mood is set to annoyed is simply that teachers at the school are back today and they're asking for the stupidest requests. Since it's the beginning of the summer, we decided to unplug all the computers. This will cut down in the energy that we use (a bonus during the summer), lessen the amount of dust that they collect, and generally make my life easier. Of course, we sent a memo about this, and even kept all the faculty office computers on till Monday. However, there’s now a whole bunch of teachers that want the classrooms computer on, simply because they're too lazy to go to their won offices, or because they really kinda wanted to finish a project, or some other BS like this. Never mind that the e-mail was sent about 2 weeks ago, they're only now just thinking about it. Add that to the fact that even kids are visiting (only god know y) and they would like the computers on also, is making pretty fucking annoyed at all of them.

I have been able to download games, copy games, and even use my old games that I got while I was living in
Other than that, work has been kind of a drag lately. I guess it's because it the last week of school or something, but its just been hard days where I'm either bored out of my mind, or have so much tech support work that its exhausting. At least today I started my new code phase, which is at least more entertaining. However, I was still pulled away most of the afternoon cause of problems at other campuses. Oh well, it should be over soon.
On the kid front, Nicolas is dong great, although he's starting to get into the "I have my own mind" phase. This means that he expects to get his way immediately and will throw a tantrum if he doesn't I encountered it just today when he absolutely wanted to play with my flat monitor. As a rule, I let him play with the mouse and keyboard, but the flat monitor is strictly a no-no. Regardless, he threw a complete fit and started bawling. This immediately prompted me to put him down and ignore him till he stopped crying. Most people would think this would take a short time, but he continued for over 15 minutes of trying to get me to pick him up and stomping on the floor. It was the most heartbreaking thing ever, but still, I refused to pick him up till he came down, which eventually he did. I guess this is when the "terrible 2s" start, its annoying and heartbreaking, but I deal with kids (and users) every day, crying over files lost and other crap...I'm pretty sure I can handle this
